SINN Féin Councillor Mickey Cooper has welcomed the news that a planning application for a new Home Bargains store in the city has been approved by Derry City and Strabane District council.

The Home Bargain group is  looking to create 100 jobs with the opening of a new outlet at a vacant unit at the busy  junction of the Buncrana Road and Strand Road which was previously part of  the Budget DIY store.

Said Cllr Cooper: “I very much welcome the decision to grant the planning application  which will now see this site going into full use again.

“A lot of hard work had gone into ensuring the application could be brought before council.

“This was a complicated process as it was quite a difficult traffic assessment given that the proposed store lies close to the Pennyburn roundabout, which takes in the Strand Road, Buncrana Road and the Culmore Road,” he said.

“Thankfully, between myself, Roads Service and the planners, this assessment was completed and the application has now been passed by the council, paving the way for up to 100 new jobs in the city.”
