Garda-tapeA COUPLE and three children from the Derry have died and one child has been rescued following a horrific tragedy in Buncrana this evening.

Details of how the Audi Jeep – with Northern Ireland registration plates – ended up going off the pier at Buncrana are still not known at this stage.

However, we can confirm that FIVE people, understood to be two adults and three children, have died.

Another child was rescued from the water after somehow being thrown from the car.

The child has now been rushed to Letterkenny University Hospital but his or her condition is not known.

The incident happened at 7.15pm this evening.

The vehicle was later recovered from the water and the bodies of the couple and the three children taken to Letterkenny hospital.

RNLI crews from Lough Swilly and Greencastle had helped in the rescue effort, assisted by gardai and the Sligo 118 rescue helicopter.
