psni 8BRITISH Amry Technical Officers have made safe a “viable pipe bomb” device in Derry’s Waterside area.

A security alert was sparked last following the discovery of a suspicious object.

Police say the pipe bomb device was found in the driveway of a house in Gelvin Gardens in the Trench Road area around 5 pm.

The alert is now over and around 20 evacuated families have been allowed to return to their homes.

The device has now been taken away for a detailed forensic examination to see if it is linked to any other devices found in the city in recent months.

Police have yet to say who they believe was behind leaving the device in a residential area.
