SDLP MLA Gerry Diver condemns as “disgusting” the pipe bomb device left at Waterside home

SDLP MLA Gerry Diver has hit out at those who left a pipe outside a home in Derry’s Waterside area yesterday evening.

He described the incident as “disgusting”.

The alarm was raised around 5 pm yesterday evening.

British Army Technical Officers made safe the “viable pipe bomb” after it was found in the driveway of a house in Gelvin Gardens in the Trench Road area.

Twenty evacuated families were later allowed to return to their homes.

The device has now been taken away for a detailed forensic examination to see if it is linked to any other devices found in the city in recent months.

Police have yet to say who they believe was behind leaving the device in a residential area.

But they say it was not sectarian and is not linked to a current threat posed by dissident republicans.

Gerry Diver MLA said: “Clearly, whoever put this device (there) had no regard for the safety and well being of the people of Gelvin Gardens.

“These are lethal devices. This is a device that could kill people very easily or maim people.

“It’s disgusting, repugnant and something I think this entire community rejects.”
