MARTIN McGuinness will today confirm that he is going to contest the Foyle constituency in the Assembly election in a bid to take a seat from the SDLP.
He will tell a Sinn Fein audience of his plans when he makes a keynote speech to 600 Sinn Fein members gathered for the Cuige Uladh AGM being held at the Millennium Forum.
The deputy First Minister currently holds a seat in Mid Ulster.
But Sinn Fein election strategists believe moving him across to his home town could help them pick up an extra seat or two.
Foyle has long been an SDLP stronghold, with three MLAs – Colum Eastwood, Gerry Diver and Mark H Durkan – compared to Sinn Féin’s two – Maeve McLaughlin and Raymond McCartney.
