DETECTIVES from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team have charged a 24-year-old man with the murder of James McDonagh in Toomebridge at the weekend.

The accused is to face Derry Magistrates’ Court this morning, Thursday, January 14, for a first remand hearing.

Mr McDonagh, from Castledawson, Co Derry was assaulted outside The Elk Inn bar and nightclub complex on the Hillhead Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 28-year-old was first taken to Antrim Area Hospital before being transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital to be treated by head trauma specialists.

Tragically, Mr McDonagh died in hospital from his head injury.

Three other men who were also arrested as part of the murder investigation have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

All four had been held at the PACE custody suite in Mugrave PSNI station for questioning.
