FULL TIME SCORE: DERRY 4-06 V 1-16 TYRONE

WHAT a cracking game on a cold January in Sunday in south Derry!

Damian Barton’s battling Derry almost pulled it off but they left themselves an uphill task going down to 14 men in the second half.

It was great credit to both teams who served up a barnstorming game in front of a 5,179 crowd this afternoon at Owenbeg.

Next up for Derry in round three is another home game against Queen’s this Wednesday night, January 13.

The first point of today’s game went to Derry after 6 mins from a Mark Lynch free after Emmett McGuckin was fouled by Tyrone’s McCrory.

Then Benny Heron gets Derry’s first goal of the day followed swifty by a Mark Craig points.

Richard Donnelly quickly replied to give Tyrone their first point of the game.

Mark Lynch scores his point from a free kick while Tyrone’s Justin McMahon receives a black card.

After 18 minutes of play Derry were leading 1-03 to Tyrone’s 0-1.

On 22 minutes McGuckin’s effort comes off the crossbar only FOR Ryan Bell to knock it over for another Derry point.

And two minutes later Ryan Bell thunders his penalty into the back of the net after Tyrone’s keeper fouled McGuckin.

Connor McAliskey and Darren McCurry grab much needed points for Tyrone and then Patrick Quinn gets a goal for the Red Hand men. With five minutes to half time Derry led by 2-04 to 1-04.

Two minutes later Jonathan Monroe gets another Tyrone point and Derry’s lead is reduced to two.

One minute into the second half and a sublime pass from Mark Lynch sets up Ryan Bell for the Derry’s 1st score and their lead goes back to three points.

But quick points in succession from Richard Donnelly and Niall Sludden and Tyrone are back in game with the gap down to 1 point.

Then disaster strikes for the Oakleaf men when Emmett McGuckin picks up a second yellow card and Derry are down to 14 men.

Substitute Sean Kavanagh, who replaced Patrick Quinn, makes the game all square with a point on 46 mins.

A minute later and Tyrone take the lead with a Mark Bradley free before Richard Donnelly scores two more points and the lead is now extended to three with Derry feeling the pressure with just 14 men.

Then there is more drama as Mark Lynch is fouled and and Ryan Bell scores his second penalty of the day.

The scores are all level at 49 minutes: Derry 3-05 v 1-11 Tyrone.

On 18 minutes of the second half Tyrone take lead with a David Mulgrew point.

Minutes later the Red Hands increase their lead by two with a Peter Harte point.

But on the stroke of 60 minutes Derry have another penalty and Mark Craig goals at the 2nd attempt after Tyrone’s keeper O’Neill saved his first shot. Derry 4-05 to Tyrone’s 1-13.

Chrissy Bradley grabs a much needed point for Derry on 61 minutes before Tyrone’s Connor McAliskey scores three points in succession from free kicks to give the Red Hands a one point lead: Derry 4-06 v 1-16 Tyrone.

There was two minutes of additional time but was it enough for another Derry score?

Sadly, Cill Ria’s Jack Kielt could have got an important point to level the game but he kicked wide.

Tyrone win a great encounter by a single point.
