A man who escaped from police custody outside Derry’s courthouse almost a week ago has now been arrested.
Police say Dean Beattie was arrested earlier today by cops who had been on his trail.
The 22-year-old had escaped from a parked police car after he was driven from Strand Road PSNI station to the court on Bishop Street on December 23.
Beattie was due to face charges of armed robbery, assaulting a couple and robbing them of £100, two mobile phones and Christmas presents.
The couple were attacked at their flat in Northlands Road earlier this month. One man has already been charged over the incident and remanded in custody.
During his bolt to freedom, Beattie got out and climbed over a six-foot high security fence, then scaled a second, higher, fence, walked through turnstiles and ran along Bishops Street.
He is currently back in custody at Strand Road PSNI station facing possible fresh charges of escaping the custody of a police constable and being unlawfully at large.
The 22-year-old is expected to face Derry Magistrates’ Court within the next 24 hours for a first remand hearing.
Bail is expected to be opposed by police as he was on the run for six days.
