STORMONT AGREEMENT HAS LET DOWN VICTIMS, SAYS COMMISSIONER

Judith Thompson commissionerCOMMISSIONER for Victims Judith Thompson said victims and survivors of the Troubles have an “overwhelming sense of disappointment” about the Stormont agreement.

She says they feel like they have been “shunted off into a dead end”.

Sinn Fein failed to reach agreement with the British government over legacy issues dealing with the past.

It has blamed the British Government for failing to disclose information relating to State murders and shootings.

Ms Thompson said said politicians must give some timescale for when they expect to “make significant progress on the issues that are being put in the “too difficult” box once again.

“It is not good enough to build up hopes for the most comprehensive set of proposals yet to address victims’ and survivors’ needs and then fail to deliver.

“They deserve respect and consideration and they cannot be shunted off into a dead end while time effectively runs out for so many.”

The SDLP has also attacked Sinn Fein for failing to get agreement on dealing with the past.
