Chief Inspector Alan Hutton says officers were attacked with bricks and missiles in Galliagh

THE PSNI says its officers were attacked with bricks and missiles during disturbances yesterday evening in Derry.

Police had been carrying out a search operation in Galliagh’s Altcar Park area of the city just before 6 pm on Monday.

No officers were injured during the trouble.

Chief Inspector Alan Hutton, the PSNI’s Operations Manager for Derry City and Strabane policing district, said today: “Unfortunately, this was not the only incident of its kind on Monday night.

“Elsewhere, stones were thrown at passing vehicles at Madams Bank Road and we have a report of at least one car having been struck.

“These attacks pose a risk of injury to motorists, with possible dangers to other people, should a driver lose control.

“I would ask those with influence in the community to use it to bring incidents like these to an end.

“Those who engage in such incidents should also consider the impact on the community and the adverse effect that a conviction could have on their lives in the long term.”
