Archbishop Eamon Martin, Primate of All Ireland,

ARCHBISHOP Eamon Martin has led sympathies to the Garda officer who was shot dead in the Republic yesterday evening.

Off-duty Garda Tony Golden was blasted to death when he went to a house following reports of a domestic incident in Omeath, Co Louth.

The suspect, Adrian Mackin, who was on bail on an IRA membership charge, then turned the gun and shot himself dead.

The Derry-born Primate of Ireland is currently in Italy.

Archbishop Martin said: “The shocking news has reached me at the Synod on the Family in Rome.

“I have spoken to the local priests.

“Like me they are very upset by this tragic incident which has devastated families and rocked the peaceful parish community in beautiful Omeath.”
