THE policing boss in Derry is promising a get tough approach against those setting of illegal fireworks and rockets in the city.

It follows complaints from residents that they are being plagued with ‘Thunder Rockets’ being set off.

During a search operation last Saturday, PSNI officer seized 13 ‘Thunder Rockets’ in the Gobnascale area.

The lethal devices were found on a teenage boy.

Three days later a ‘Thunder Rocket’ was pushed through the letterbox of a house in Shantallow.

And on Wednesday, City North Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) arrested a 14-years-old boy in Fergleen Park for possession of a firework.

He is to be reported to the PPS for the offence of possession of an illegal firework.

The NPT City North team also arrested a 19-years-old male in Cornshell Fields after he was found with a number of ‘garden fireworks’.

The teenager is also to be reported prosecution in the local courts.

Derry city policing boss Chief Inspector Tony Callagan said his officers would be cracking down on the illegal sale and use of fireworks in the weeks leading up to Hallowe’en on Saturday, October 31.

Added Chief Inspector Callaghan: “It is clear that no one wants this type of anti-social behaviour in their areas.

“I would ask anyone involved in this type of activity to stop and think about the effect your actions are having on your neighbours and the vulnerable people in your community.”

Anyone with information about those selling illegal fireworks or those in possession of them should ring police on the 101 non emergency number.
