DERRY’S Nobel prize winner John Hume has hailed Brian Friel as “a genius” whose “work will be with us forever”.
Mr Friel died this morning in his home in Doengal aged 86.
Although born in Tyrone, he grew up and was educated in St Columb’s College in Derry.
Former SDLP leader Mr Hume said: “He had a unique ability to transform the local to the global and bring the past to the present which enthralled people the world over.”
The death of such a brilliant writer and playwright has touched so man that his passing is now trending on Twitter.
