Derry City manager Peter Hutton’s team beaten 2-0 by Drogheda Utd

DERRY City are back in the dangerous relegation zone after a poor 2-0 defeat to lowlt Drogheda United in yesterday evening’s clash at the Brandywell.

Peter Hutton’s men looked a shadow of themselves after their two recent wins.

A win could have put them in seventh place in the SSE Airtricity League.

But it is now back to the drawing board for the Candystripes who staring the barrel of a relegation dog fight.

Derry keeper Gerard Doherty saved well on 17 minutes when he held onto Ger Pender’s low drive from the edge of the box.

Ciaran O’Connor should have opened the scoring for the Candystripes but blasted over teh bar after Dooley put him through.

And O’Connor had another chance on 37 minutes with a close range header only to see Drogs keeper Schlingermann pull off a brilliant save.

The Drogs took the lead two minutes before half time when Sean Thornton headed home from a Adams Whelan cross.

On 52 mins, Derry City should have equalised put it on a plate for Dooley only for him to see his goalward bound ball cleared off the line.

Twenty minutes later Barry McNamee thought he had equalised only to find his free kick smash into the side netting.

Then Drogeda sealed the win with 13 minutes to go when James Marks fired home past keeper Doherty from close range for the second goal of game.

It was a disappointing evening for the Candystripes and the fans at the Brandywell.

Derry City: Doherty, Cornwall, Barry, Jarvis; Dooley, McEneff (McLaughlin 68), McCormack, McNamee, Timlin; McEleney, O’Connor (Quigley 75).

Drogheda United: Schlingermann, Gorman, Byrne, Daly, Thornton, Pender (Mulvenna 66), Whelan (Bayly 81), O’Reilly, Treacy (Brennan 56), Buckley, Marks.

Referee: Mr Ben Connolly (Dublin).
