DERRY City’s annual festival of football kicks off today.

A staggering 853 matches will take place over the next six days during the Foyle Cup.

Thousands of young players and visitors have descended into the city for the 2015 Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup.

The tournament, which will run from today until Saturday, July 25 inclusive, will see fixtures take place across Derry, Strabane, Limavady and Donegal.

Teams from Finland, Canada and America join their counterparts from across Ireland in what is a record entry of 278 teams.

There are 24 female teams are included in that number.

The Foyle Cup has become a breeding ground for players of the future such as Robbie Keane, John O’Shea, Paddy McNair, Darron Gibson, Shay Given, Paddy McCourt, Daniel Lafferty, James McClean, Stephen Ireland and Kevin Kilbane.

Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane recently appeared in the city to launch details of the Foyle Cup.

The competition is not only a good experience for potential stars of the future but also an economic boost for the North West with hotels and bed and breakfasts doing a roaring trade from players, supporters and families.
