WEATHER UPDATE: ALL roads in Derry have been re-opened following the freak flash floods that hit the city yesterday evening.
The flooding caused traffic chaos yesterday evening with some roads unpassable due to the torrential downpour. PSNI officers advised motorists against making unnecessary journeys as conditions were described as treacherous.
The worst affected areas were in The Bogside, Creggan, Foyle Road and Strand Road areas of the city with several homes being flooded causing significant damage.
Angry homeowners have demanded the council carry out major repair work on drains to avoid flooding in the future.
Thankfully the torrential rain eventually eased, but there was still heavy downpours during the night and into this morning which caused traffic disruption.
However, Derry City Council have now confirmed that ALL roads have now been re-opened.
The Department for Regional Development said Transport NI and NI Water had responded to a number of requests for assistance in the Derry area including nine reports of internal flooding and 49 reports of external flooding.
“Crews worked throughout the night diverting floodwater where possible and distributing around 50 sandbags,” a spokesperson said.
“A number of roads were closed for a time including Lone Moor Road and Rossville Street. All roads are now re-opened
