MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Elisha McCallion will attend a pirate themed fun day to mark the official opening of a new play park at Melvin Sports Complex on Saturday 04 July from 12 noon to 2pm.
This £70,000 project is funded by the former Strabane District Council, and is a key element of the new Council’s ongoing investment of play parks and health and community facilities across the region.
Mayor Cllr Elisha McCallion, welcoming the opening of the play park said the new play area was a significant investment for the area and an important leisure asset that would benefit the entire Strabane community.
“The new Melvin play area is a fantastic leisure and play resource. It has a very quirky design with lots of really innovative play equipment to suit all ages including a Vippy Seesaw, a 2.4m Olympic 2012 Basket Swing and a pirate ship multi-play unit, to name but a few.
“There is a great family friendly open space at the back of the building which includes a picnic area, a zipline, seesaws, swings and a small tower. Its every kids dream in terms of play facilities and I am confident it will be a big hit with the local community.”
Karen McFarland, Director of Health and Community with Derry City and Strabane District Council explained that the new facility replaces the former play park at Melvin Sports Complex that was demolished last year as part of the refurbishment project to include the provision of an international four court sports hall.
She said she was delighted to see the project successfully completed and families able to come and enjoy this local facility.
She said: “This new play area is a safe space for children to play in a central and neutral environment where families can come together to enjoy some time together, have fun and take part in active play.
“We are delighted with the work that has been done and delighted to play host to a free family fun day to celebrate the official opening,” she said.
The family fun day will take place on Saturday, 04 July, from 12 noon to 2.00pm. Admission is £2 and will include a range of fun family friendly activities including arts and crafts, spot prizes, fun and games.
