SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood says work on traffic lights in Shantallow to start in July

SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood has been given an assurance that work to install traffic lights at a busy Shantallow junction will begin by the end of July.

Transport NI had initially committed to begin installing the road safety measures at the junction of Bradley’s Pass and Glengalliagh Road in March.

However, Mr Eastwood has now been told by the authority that the work will begin on July 27.

He said: “Although it is disappointing and frustrating that the work has been pushed back, it will be a seen as a case of better late than never by many motorists and pedestrians who use the very busy junction.

“The danger and the delays experienced by drivers at this busy junction are well known. There have been countless accidents at the site over the years and collisions have become all too frequent in recent times.

“My office has received a large number of complaints regarding driver and pedestrian safety at the junction.

“We have held meetings with representatives from Transport NI on site to have the safety issues addressed and the provision of traffic lights will come as a welcome relief to local residents and road users despite the undue delays.”
