doirecolmcilleSOCIAL Development Minister Mervyn Storey MLA has welcomed the completion of a new £1.2million development at Lowry’s Lane in Derry.

The sports changing and community meeting space complex will allow residents of all age groups the opportunity to become actively involved in many sporting activities.

The project was supported by the Department for Social Development with a contribution of £480,115 towards the £1.2million project for Doire Colmcille CLG.

Minister Storey said: “This is an exciting opportunity for the local people who live and work in the City to actively participate in a wide range of sport and well-being activities.”

The new complex will also allow for the promotion of Gaelic games, culture awareness, dance, Irish language, health and well-being programmes, drugs and alcohol awareness sessions, gambling awareness and off the street initiatives.

Residents will also have the opportunity to avail of sports training which will enable them to become coaches within their own community.

Minister Storey added: “The funding of £480,115 by my Department has enabled Doire Colmcille CLG to drive and deliver this brand new purpose-built facility which will provide additional community space within the centre for use by a number of community groups.

“This state of the art facility will deliver a range of programmes including health, training opportunities, environmental and educational programmes, services and activities, all of which will meet the needs of local residents of all ages living in this area of the City.”

Mr Mark Higgins Chairperson of Doire Colmcille CLG added: “We are delighted with the completion of this capital build which will allow the residents, young and elderly, to enjoy the opportunities the multi purpose sports changing and community meeting space complex will bring.

“This facility is much needed and will meet the needs of many residents living in the Outer West Neighbourhood Renewal area.”
