THE PSNI is putting motorists on foot of notice that it is getting tough on those behind the wheel caught using their mobile phones.
It is a part a campaign by police forces across England, Wales and Scotland to bring drivers to book.
A spokesman for Roads Policing in Maydown said: “This week sees the first ever UK wide campaign to specifically combat the use of mobile phones whilst driving.
“The number of motorists using mobiles to make calls, texts & social media updates has increased.
“And it has been deemed to be the principle causation factor in a number of serious collisions.
“Using a mobile while driving increases the risk of a collision by a factor of four and driving ability is decreased to something similar to that observed for driving at the legal alcohol limit.
“Road Policing patrols from Maydown will be #keepingpeoplesafe as they look for drivers who flout the law.”
Anyone caught using their phone at the wheel could face court prosecution, a fine and penalty points on their licence.
