Special Olympics athletes Sam Mullan and Carys Rowe, Newtownabbey Racers with Paul McMhon, Castlecourt, Sponsor for Special Olympics Ulster, are calling upon the public to support the charity’s annual Collection Day this Friday April 24.

THE Special Olympics Needs You!

And tomorrow, Friday April, an army of volunteers will take to villages, towns and cities around the North to raise funds for Special Olympics Ulster annual Collection Day.

The Special Olympics team needs over 500 volunteers to help raise £75,000.

Signing up to help raise funds at a collection point in your village, town or city will make all the difference.

The Collection Day is the biggest annual fundraising event in aid of the North’s Special Olympics.

Sponsored by Eircom, the money raised on Collection Day will go towards supporting the sporting, competition and health programmes that Special Olympics offer to their athletes.

Without the funds raised on Collection Day, the Special Olympics team simply could not function and the life-changing programme the organisation offers to athletes with intellectual disabilities would be greatly diminished.

Special Olympics is committed to developing their services, so that every person with an intellectual disability has the option of joining a club in their local community.

With over 2,000 registered athletes participating in 15 sports in 86 clubs around the North, every donation does make a difference to the lives of athletes and their families.

Shaun Cassidy, Regional Director of the North’s Special Olympics team said; “This is our biggest annual fundraising event so it is hugely important to us.

“If you have a few hours to spare on Friday, 24th April please help us by joining one of our collection teams.

“You don’t even need to be a registered volunteer so please let your family and friends know too.

“Every donation we receive on April 24th will help us to continue to change the lives of people with an intellectual disability throughout Northern Ireland. With your help, we can all give our athletes a winning chance.”

Carolan Lennon, Managing Director of eircom Wholesale also added, “This year is a milestone year for eircom and Special Olympics as we celebrate 30 years of partnership.

“Every person with an intellectual disability has the opportunity to avail of the supports of Special Olympics, to develop new skills, make new friends, and become the best they can be, the benefits of this can’t be underestimated for both athletes and their families.”

Throughout the day, the Special Olympics team and the volunteers will keep everyone up to date with their collection by tweeting and posting on Facebook.
