POLITICIANS CONDEMN ‘PUNISHMENT’ ATTACKS

Cllr Sandra Duffy.

POLITICIANS have condemned the attacks on two men who were badly beaten in a so called punishment attack in the Galliagh area of Derry on Sunday night.

Sinn Féin Councillor Sandra Duffy said: “There is no place whatsoever for these attacks in our society.

“Those responsible do not come forward to provide any level of justification for these acts to the community.

“There are clearly other ways to deal with the issues affecting us all, both with the community and with the PSNI. I would urge anyone who has any information on this attack to bring it to the police.”

SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood has described the attack as “brutal and barbaric”.

Two men, both in their 30s, remain in hospital with serious injuries following the attack at the Ederowen Park area of Galliagh on Sunday night.

Mr Eastwood said: “It’s understood that the victims were viciously attacked by up to six masked men armed with baseball bats and iron bars.

“They were beaten about the head and body in a sustained attack and are understood to have suffered broken ribs and limbs as a result. Both men remain in hospital this morning.”

Mr Eastwood added: “This was a brutal and barbaric attack which is to be utterly condemned. There can be no justification for such violence in our society.

“It is vital that anyone with information on those behind this grotesque act speaks to the police immediately. Thugs have for too long been going unpunished for violence like this. Society must take a stand against these criminals while the police and justice system must ensure the job is finished by putting them behind bars.”

Shantallow SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney said the attack was in no way related to the incidents of disorder in the estate at the weekend.

“There is no place for attacks like this in our community. The people of Galliagh want to live in peace. We are sick and tired of anti-social gangs causing mayhem and masked attackers dealing out their own form twisted, so-called retribution.”

He added: “There is a strong community spirit in Galliagh and we are working hard to improve the image of our area. It is important that everyone who knows about those involved in these incidents act in the best interests of the community by reporting them to the police.”
