Former Derry City star Rory Patterson has become embroiled in a bitter war-of-words with Irish Sun Sports writer Neil O’Riordan.

Patterson had his Derry City contract cancelled by mutual consent in January and last week signed for Australian outfit Cockburn United.

Derry City manager Peter Hutton has signed Anthony Elding as a replacement for Patterson at The Brandywell.

However, Elding has already played for four Irish clubs in just over two years, Elding has played for Sligo Rovers, Cork City, Ballinamallard United and now Derry City.

Irish Sun chief Sports writer cheekily tweeted that Derry had signed a low-maintenance replacement for Rory Patterson in the form of Anthony Elding.

Patterson took offence to the tweet and tweeted O’Riordan directly asking him for an explanation?

When O’Riordan replied that the tweet wasn’t directed at him, Patterson responded angrily by saying, “Probably the worst come back ever, sarcasm is my thing, do you actually know me?

O’Riordan then responded by saying, “Well in that case you’re a prima donna, a mé féiner who’d pick an argument with your shadow, is that more what you were looking for.

Patterson fumed and responded nastily saying, “Who the f**k are you to pass judgement, never spoke a word to you. You know f**k all about me, probably never kicked a ball in your life, you useless p***k.

The toxic conversation between the pair continued, although it must be said O’Riordan never responded in the foul-mouthed way Patterson conducted his fury over a harmless initial tweet for Riordan.

Patterson continued to goad O’Riordan, and said done well in English at school and now you think you’re an expert on sport. You mug, you couldn’t even get picked in PE.

The conversation ended with O’Riordan taking Patterson up on his advice to un-follow him on Twitter.
