COMMUNITY ALERT: THIS is a Virgin media box in Southend Park in the Brandywell.

But when concerned residents called a number inside it to warn of the dangers to children, all they got was….an answering machine.

Local councillor Gary Donnelly said: “It has been forced open by youths who appeared to remove items from it. Locals are concerned about the safety of their children.

“There is a so-called ‘hotline number’ and a reference code on the inside in case it is opened.

“However when you ring its an automated service which deals with the call. I have to say this is not very re-assuring. I am concerned someone will be hurt if this continues to lie like this.”

It is just the latest street communications box to be vandalised in Derry in recent weeks.

Cllr Donnelly has called on those responsible to desist.

“It might be a bit of fun to them, but they are endangering the communities they live in,” he said.
