SCAMMERS TARGET DERRY AGAIN WITH BOGUS CLAIMS

phonescamCYBER crooks are targeting people in Derry again with scams aimed at emptying bank accounts.

Derry Daily has been inundated with reports involving phone calls from people claiming to represent insurance companies, SKY TV and computer software companies.

In every case the callers claimed that they needed to take an urgent payment in order to update policies or upgrade services.

Thankfully in every case reported to us the intended victims knew they were scams.

However as one reader pointed out: “I knew what it was within seconds but I know mother would have fallen for it.

“In my case it was that the house insurance needed to be paid an extra premium or cover would run out that day; I knew it was rubbish and told the caller that and hung up. People should warn elderly or more vulnerable people this is going on.”

Other scams included cutting off TV signals immediately because direct debits had been missed – or urgent upgrades for software before computers would crash beyond repair.
