The drainage scheme has been given the green light in an effort to alleviate a longstanding flooding problem in the Urney Road/Urney Court area of the village.

Cllr Mc Hugh, who has been lobbying Rivers Agency on the issues involved on behalf of local residents told Derry Daily, “Residents to the rear of Urney Court have been having to contend with water channelling down from higher ground into the rear gardens of their homes.

“And always having to be vigilant to the risk of having their homes flooded during spells of heavy rain and a local farmer has also had to contend with the associated problem of water ponding/flooding on his land on the adjoining Urney Road because of lack of proper drainage.

“Following representations and follow up site meetings with Rivers Agency on the issues involved.

“I now welcome confirmation from the Agency that it will commence work on a major drainage scheme in late January/early February to channel surface water away from the affected areas and into existing drainage and water ways.

“Hopefully this scheme will serve to solve the problems local residents have been enduring and I would like to thank the Rivers Agency staff for all their work on this issue.
