The Wild Atlantic Way coastal route should be extended into the North in order to boost tourism, East Derry Sinn Fein MLA Cathal Ó hOisín has said.
Speaking after raising the issue in the Assembly, Mr Ó hOisín said the recently established coastal route, which stretches from Kinsale in Cork to Inishowen, was a “great initiative” to promote Ireland as a tourist destination but stopped at Donegal.
He said it should be continued through the Derry and Antrim coasts to link up with the Causeway Coast and Glens coastal route to have a single marketable tourism entity stretching from Cork to Ballycastle.
He added: “That coastline stretches around the entire island but sadly the tourism promotion does not.
“The beautiful coastline of Ireland is one of our greatest assets in terms of attracting tourists.”
He concluded: “I raised this in the Assembly and was pleased when tourism minister Arlene Foster agreed with me that the two routes should be linked for the benefit of tourism north and south.”
