michaelmeenanA teenage IRA member killed by his own bomb 40 years ago will be remembered at a commemoration event in Derry tonight.

Sixteen-year-old Michael Meenan, from Shantallow, was killed when the bomb he was carrying exploded prematurely at a filling station on Strand Road on the evening of 30 October, 1974.

Tonight’s commemoration will take place at 7.30pm at the republican monument in Shantallow.

Sinn Fein Councillor Elisha McCallion said: “These events are very important indeed.

“We will be gathering to remember with dignity and pride the memory of Michael and stand in solidarity with his family and friends. I would encourage as many people as possible to attend.”

The commemoration is organised by the Shantallow Monument committee and Derry Republican Graves Association.
