Sitting MP Pat Doherty has been re-selected by Sinn Fein as their candidate in next May’s Westminster election.
Speaking after being selected at a party convention meeting, Mr Doherty said he was to have been re-selected.
He added: “I am extremely proud to represent the people of this area since the historic ‘Greening of the West’ election in 2001 when Michelle Gildernew, Martin McGuinness and I were elected in Omagh Leisure Centre.
“That election and West Tyrone provided huge impetus to Sinn Féin. 13 years on we are Ireland’s largest political party.”
Mr Doherty said while other parties were prepared to accept and implement Tory cuts and put the most vulnerable people in “even more poverty,” Sinn Féin was totally opposed to the Tory Welfare Cuts.
He added: “We will continue to stand up for all communities being targeted by the Tories. These cuts will take money out of the pockets of real people: the working poor, unemployed, families on low income, women and people with disabilities.
“Sinn Féin offers an alternative to the politics of accepting the breadcrumbs thrown from London and will stand strong against measures designed to impoverish our communities.”
He added Sinn Féin offered “strong representation” across West Tyrone, working alongside the party’s “strong team” in the Assembly and Councils.
He added: “We have collectively delivered millions of pounds of investment in community regeneration and projects through initiatives like neighbourhood renewal.
“We are proactively campaigning for the completion and delivery of the A5 and the progression of the Three Rivers Project in Strabane.
“We have also ensured the demilitarisation of Lisanelly and St Lucia British military bases in Omagh and secured the transfer of the Lisanelly site to the Executive for the construction of a £130 million shared education campus.
“As well as working for the development of a new and enhanced hospital in Omagh, I have also been to the fore in the campaign to secure the Radiotherapy Unit in Altnagelvin.”
Mr Doherty concluded: “While Sinn Féin continues to grow from strength to strength across West Tyrone and Ireland, we take nothing for granted and we look forward to meeting you and speaking to you on your door step over the coming months.”
