The tragic death of a young Co Derry driver during yesterday’s Down Rally has shocked the community of Kilrea, SDLP East Derry MLA John Dallat has said.
Mr Dallat was speaking after the death of Ryan Bradley who was killed when his car crashed into a wall and ended up in Lough Island Reavy reservoir near Castledwellan.
His body was recovered from the water by police divers.
His co-driver was taken to hospital but he was not thought to be seriously injured. The event was subsequently cancelled.
The accident happened at around 11.30am as Mr Bradley, who was in his 20s, was taking part in the first stage of the event.
He was a member of Magherafelt and District Motor Club and club chairperson, The club chairperson James McKeefry who was competing at Saturday’s event, said the club was devastated by the tragedy.
Mr Dallat said: “It is difficult to describe the sense of shock that has gripped this community as word spread that Ryan Bradley had lost his life in a tragic rally accident.
“Ryan was much-loved by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. To his parents, his brother and sisters and the wider family circle all we can do is extend our sympathy, support them in their hour of need and pray that in these difficult times they will find the strength to cope with their grief.
“Ryan’s interest in rallying was entirely professional, always focused on safety and this tragedy can only be described as very unfortunate and difficult to understand.”
Mr Dallat concluded: “Ryan was the third generation of the well-known road construction company Patrick Bradley Limited of Kilrea.”
