SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan is supporting today’s World Mental Health Day and has said people in Derry and throughout the North who suffer from mental health illnesses should not be marginalised in terms of current pressures on the health and care budget.
Mr Durkan, who joined members of the Beacon Centre at Free Derry Corner, to support World Mental Health Day and people throughout the city with mental health needs, said he wanted to ensure people with schizophrenia and other mental health conditions got the best possible care and support to manage their illness and help them recover.
He added: “With all of the pressures on the health and care budget mental health should not be seen as marginal in terms of policy planning and service shaping.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the Beacon Centre and all of the other mental health charities throughout the North who work so hard to help reduce stigma and discrimination and ensure that sufferers get the support and respect they need.”
