Derry City 2 Shamrock Rovers 0

Derry City’s hopes of winning a second FAI Cup in three years were kept alive with two late, late goals by Michael Duffy and Rory Patterson in their semi-final replay with Shamrock Rovers at Brandywell tonight.

In a disappointing game, which saw Rovers finish with ten men, Derry’s top scorers this season struck in the dying minutes to set up a final clash with St Patrick’s Athletic.

The best chance of the first half fell to Rovers after Gerard Doherty came for and missed a Madden cross but Waters was unable to take advantage.

The pendulum swung the home side’s way midway through the second half when Jason McGuinness was shown a red card for a foul inside the penalty box but Patterson missed the spot kick.

As Derry pushed for the opening goal, Lowry hit a post while a Patterson effort was brilliantly blocked by Kenna before Duffy’s late strike sent the home fans wild with delight.

Patterson made up for his penalty miss with a second goal for the home side a minute later.
