Activating a smoke alarmDerry SDLP Cllr Angela Dobbins has called for the return of the “Thumbs Up It’s Monday” fire safety advert to our television screens.

Her call comes after an elderly couple were alerted to an early morning fire in their home in the Culmore area at the weekend.

Cllr Dobbins has urged everyone, ” young and elderly alike,” to ensure  a smoke alarm was installed and was properly working in their homes.

Cllr Dobbins said: “An elderly couple from Woodlands in Culmore were alerted by a smoke alarm that their frying pan had caught fire.

“Although the fire fighters were quick to respond the blaze was already extinguished. Paramedics checked the couple for shock.

“I urge everyone to obtain a smoke alarm and to those who already have one to ensure that the batteries are working.

“The Fire Service offer a free advice service to everyone and will provide and fit smoke detectors. I will be insisting that the information advert ‘Thumbs Up its Monday’ be once again returned to our tv screens.”
