northwestgolfclubIt was a great weekend for low scores at North West Golf Club at Lisfannon.

Leading the charge on Saturday in the Millar Cup was Charlie Doherty (5) with a level par 70 which equated to 41 points.

Four over after nine holes and 17 points,  Charlie then birdied the 10th, 15th, 16th and 18th holes to add a further 24 pts to his score which just pipped his playing partner, Sean Bridge, who covered the course in 73 shots and had a very tidy card of 13 two-pointers and five three-pointers and also finished on 41 pts but was beaten on a countback.

The gross prize was picked up by Stewart McGinley with a three over 73.

In third place was Shane Devlin, 17 pts on the front nine a brilliant back nine of 23 pts for a grand total of 40 points.

The winner of the back nine with 23 points was Don Coyle.

Full result:

1st Charlie Doherty (5) 41 pts

2nd Sean Bridge (8) 41 pts

Gross Stewart McGinley 73

3rd Shane Devlin (10) 40 pts

B/Nine Don Coyle 23 pts

Irish Bowl

Sunday’s competition, played in inclement weather produced some great scoring, with Cathal McElhinney, showing the rest of the field a clean pair of heels.

Cathal, brother of “The Amature Champion,” returned a scorecard with only 69 shots recorded on it for a winning score of 63 nett, four bogeys being compensated by birdies at the second, fourth, 11th, 15th and 16th holes.

In second place was one of the McLaughlin golfing Dynasty, Ronan, with a score of 66 nett, which would of won on most days.

Ronan covered the front nine in a one over 36 and followed that up with a three over 38 on the back nine.

Gross winner was the in-form Charlie Doherty with 70.

Third place was filled by Gary McLaughlin with a very tidy nett 69.

Picking up the Back nine with a nett 33 was Philip Meenan.

Full result:

1st Cathal McElhinney (6) 63

2nd Ronan McLaughlin (9) 66

Goss Charlie Doherty 70

3rd Gary McLaughlin (10) 69

B/nine Philip Meenan 33.

C.S.S. 71.

Golfer of the Year Update

Padraig MacLochlainn at one stage seemed to have an unatainable lead of over 30 points in the race for the prestigious, Golfer of the Year trophy, but a couple of great scores from Charlie Doherty and Lee Gallagher has closed the gap to 12 points with three counting competitions remaining, Padraig is sitting on 84 points, Charlie on 72 and Lee with 57.

It looks like this will go all the way to the “wire” before a winner is declared.
