A recent “near fatal” accident at the junction of the Prospect Road/Bellspark Road highlighted, once again, the need for increased safety measures including consideration being given to the installation of a “staggered crossroads,” Derg Sinn Fein Cllr Maoliosa McHugh has said.

Cllr McHugh said while he welcomed replacement road signage he believed additional remedial measures would help improve safety.

Speaking after a site meeting with Roads Service officials at the junction, Cllr McHugh said: “I welcome the replacement of the signage that was damaged as a result of this near fatal accident and Road Service has committed to providing additional signage warning of the danger and to improve the site-lines at the junction.

“While acknowledging these additional remedial measures will help improve safety, I believe a more imaginative approach is needed to fundamentally address the dangers at this junction and it has been suggested that a staggered cross-roads would make such a meaningful difference.”

Cllr McHugh concluded: “I appreciate that this would involve a substantial scheme of works but it needs to be fully considered.”
