STRABANE NEWS: CONCERNS AT LISNFAFIN LIGHTING UPGRADE

streetlightsAssurances provided by the Lighting Section  of the Department of Regional Development (DRD) regarding ongoing upgrade works at Lisnafin Park in Strabane have been welcomed by Sinn Fein Cllr Karina Carlin.

Cllr Carlin was speaking after being contacted by a number of residents who were concerned about the future of street lighting in the area.

Cllr Carlin said; “For many months now, there has been an ongoing upgrade of lighting columns in and around the Lisnafin Park/Ardnalee area, and there is no doubt the new lighting columns provide more effective, efficient and economical illumination in this well-populated residential area.

“Recently, however, I have been contacted by residents in a particular part of the estate who expressed concerns that removal of two old lighting columns in particular would result in the area in the vicinity of their homes being poorly lit.

“This included a long alleyway with high fencing on either side, which presents particular concerns for public safety.

“Following a visit to the area and meeting with the residents, we made representations to the DRD Lighting Section.

“We have received assurances from the DRD that these two columns – #540 and #541- are not to be removed as part of this programme of works.

“However, should they be vandalised or otherwise cease to function, we have been advised there are no plans that they will be replaced or repaired.

“It is therefore important that the lighting of that particular area is kept under review to ensure there is proper and adequate illumination.”

Cllr Carlin concluded: “I would ask any residents with concerns or queries about the ongoing lighting upgrade programme to contact myself or the Sinn Fein office locally.”
