The announcement by Education Minister John O’Dowd of additional funding for schools in an “historically neglected and overlooked” area of Derry, has been welcomed by Sinn Fein Councillor Eric McGinley.
Cllr McGinley said the additional finances will allow Holy Family Primary School and St. Mary’s College to cater “much more adequately” for pupils as well as assist in the provision of increased services.
The Minister has also provided additional funding to Gaelscoil na Daróige as well as agreeing to the provision of four new temporary classrooms.
Cllr McGinley said these measures reinforced the Minister’s support for the provision of Irish language education in the area.
Welcoming the funding, Cllr McGinley said while more work was required, the funding for the schools was “another significant step” towards ensuring areas which had been “historically” neglected and overlooked were now being treated with equality and respect.
Cllr McGinley added: “On behalf of Sinn Féin, I want to thank the Minister for his contribution towards education in the Ballymagroarty and Foyle Springs area which is part of an additional £2.8 million pounds investment in our children’s future across the city and district.”
