Derry’s James McClean has been beaten to the Republic of Ireland’s Young Player of the Year Award.
The accolade was awarded to Everton’s James McCarthy at the 24th Three FAI International Football Awards which took place in the RTE studios in Dublin last night.
However, there was good news for another former Derry City player, Killian Brennan was crowned the SSE Airtricity League Player of the Year for his performances for Premiership title winners St Patrick’s Athletic.
There was good news also for one North West player – Malachy McDermott, of Cockhill Celtic (Buncrana), a former Derry City Reserves player, was named Intermediate Player of the Year.
However, there was disappointment for Donegal’s Seamus Coleman, the Everton defender losing out in the Senior Player of the Year category to LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane.
At last night’s ceremony, former Republic of Ireland and Liverpoool midfielder, Ronnie Whelan, was inducted into the FAI Hall of Fame.
