Staff at a Derry charity have been left “totally horrified” by the treatment of a cat in the grounds of the University of Ulster’s Magee College campus in the city.
Rainbow Rehoming Centre staff have hit out after the cat, which has been “hanging around” the university grounds for months, had been lifted and “dumped.”
A Rainbow spokesperson said: “We were contacted today again reference this cat, only to learn that the cat had recently been lifted from the campus grounds and dumped but that the cat had now made its way back to the campus grounds again…
It is against the law to dump any animal and the spokesperson asked anyone who knew who lifted the cat to “private message” the Centre.
The spokesperson added: “This cat has been hanging around the uni grounds for months and The Rainbow Rehoming Centre have been contacted on several occasions and have advised callers to do leaflet drops/posters etc to get to know where it may live.
“We have spoken to grounds security and they also share the same view as us that the cat is owned locally. There are many houses surrounding Magee and the university grounds could be this cat’s back yard. He is not under weight nor does not look like a stray.”
The spokesperson concluded: “The last time students lifted a cat from the university and brought it to the centre, the cat actually was reclaimed by its very upset elderly owner.”
