Local businesses have been called on to get involved and support Derry’s Festival of Trees being staged as part of the city’s Legenderry Christmas campaign.DERRY+_13

The festival is part of the city’s exciting programme of Christmas events across the city which will run from this Friday to early next month.

The call has come from Derry City Council which last year invested heavily in Christmas lights and this year the Festival of Trees aims to enhance and complement the Christmas offering even further.

Over 100 additional trees will be lit up throughout the city.

Encouraging businesses to take part, Liz Cunningham, tourist project assistant with the City Council, said it was a unique way for local businesses to get involved.

She said: “By sponsoring a tree, businesses will get a tree located in a prime location branded with their company name, inclusion in some PR opportunities and 40 “’Hope for 2014′ decorative cards for staff and customers to fill in and place on the tree as well as a donation to the Mayors Chosen Charity Macmillan Cancer Support.”

She added: “The business sponsored trees will sit alongside trees decorated by schools as part of the Festival of Trees Schools Programme. Please note that are only a limited number of trees still available for company sponsorship and will be based on a first come basis.”

The launch of the Christmas Lights and Festival of Trees will take place this Friday, when all of the trees will be switched on.

Derry City Council has put together a programme of events that is expected to attract thousands over this weekend.

The programme includes music and street entertainment in the city centre and Ebrington Square.

The festival will also coincide with the Lumiere Festival, which will take place at the end of this month is expected to attract over 100,000 visitors to the city.
