Residents in the Waterside area of Derry have been warned to be alert after a spate of break-ins in the area.burlgar

The warning comes from Sinn Féin Councillor Bridget Meehan after at least five homes had been  broken into in the Top of the Hill area over the past few weeks.

Cllr Meehan said: “There is a concern in the local community about the regularity of these incidents and the impact such intrusions into anyone’s home can have for months if not years after.

“It’s a very frightening thought to have someone breaking into your home particularly if you live on your own.

“Sadly, the criminals behind these incidents care little of the devastation they leave behind. They are looking for anything they can make money on quickly such as phones ,lap tops, jewellery and at this time of year presents people have bought in for Christmas.

“People should not be worried to take that extra few minutes to carry out simple precautions to make it as difficult as possible for the thieves and deter them from targeting their home.”

Cllr Meehan said anyone who saw any suspicious activity should not hesitate to inform the PSNI or community workers.
