Ddelegates from across Europe will look at best practice in the heritage management  at the European Walled Towns Symposium which will run in the city to Sunday.

The event is being organised by Holywell Trust with support from Derry City Council and is concentrating on Walled Towns and Historic Towns and the contribution they can make to economic recovery in Europe.

The city’s Mayor, Cllr Martin Reilly, said it was a huge accolade for the city to host an event of such significance.

He said: “This is a very prestigious event with speakers and delegates travelling from all over Europe to participate.”

Director of Holywell Trust, Eamonn Deane said they were “delighted” to be in partnership with Derry City Council in bringing such an important European Walled Towns event to the city.

He added: “It is indicative of our shared ambition to have Derry known and promoted throughout Europe in Community and management of history and heritage.”
A number of key note speakers will be attend the event, details of which will be available shortly.

Derry last hosted the European Walled Towns in 1994, when preparations for the symposium accelerated the reopening of Derry’s Walls to the public, after decades of use of the Walls by the military during the early years of the Troubles.
