Derry’s Millennium Forum

The Forum has been nominated for the prestigious entertainment accolade – My Theatre Matters! UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre Award.

The cityside venue is the only theatre in the North West to be shortlisted for the award and is battling it out for the public vote against Belfast’s Grand Opera House and The Lyric Theatre for the Northern Ireland regional vote.

Paul Mason, Forum general manager, has reminded the Derry public they had only 24  hours to register their vote.

He said: “This is a unique opportunity for the Forum to be recognised nationally for such a significant award. The Millennium Forum plays an important role at the heart of our local community and we hope that the public will get behind us to support us by giving us their vote.  This is everyone’s chance to shout about how much they value the work of their local theatre!”

Over 225 arts venues are asking the public to vote for them in the inaugural My Theatre Matters! Most Welcoming Theatre Award in association with Classic FM, which will be announced at the annual UK Theatre Awards ceremony in London’s historic Guildhall on Sunday, 20 October next.

Online voting for this new public award is now open via the Classic FM website – www.classicfm.com/theatre – and closes at the end of this month.

To ensure a fair and competitive process, the public voting system will be weighted by theatre capacity with the winner decided by number of public votes divided by number of venue seats.

Venues taking part range from those with less than 100 seats including London’s Gate and Half Moon Theatres and The Boo in Rossendale, to Edinburgh’s Playhouse with over 3,000.

Organised by the Theatrical Management Association (TMA), the Theatre Awards are the only nationwide awards to honour creative excellence and the outstanding achievement seen on and off stage throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
