A PSNI spokesperson said detectives from its serious crime branch made the discovery during a search of land on Cemetery Road in the town.

It is believed the search was being carried out in connection with ongoing investigations into dissident republican activity in the Co Tyrone area.

A police spokesman said they recovered “what is believed to be a quantity of explosives and explosive material.”

Army technical officers were called to the find but no homes were evacuated. Roads in the area remained open throughout the operation.
