DERRY SUFFER EIGHTH HOME LEAGUE DEFEAT

Derry City’s poor form at home continues to haunt them after they went down 1-0 to title chasing St Patrick’s Athletic at the Brandywell last night.

Killian Brennan broke Derry hearts at the Brandywell last night.

Killian Brennan broke Derry hearts at the Brandywell last night.

The victory sees the Dubliners return to the summit of the Airtricity Premier Division, 10 points ahead of Declan Devine’s  side. Amazingly Derry were 10 points ahead of the Saints earlier in the season.

The visitors went in at half-time with a deserved lead, former Derry City midfielder putting them ahead with only two minutes on the clock, when his spectacular free kick from 25 yards out found the top corner of the net, giving keeper Gerard Doherty no chance.

Boss Devine must have given his charges the “Fergie hair-dryer treatment” during the half-time interval because they emerged in the second half to put up stiffer resistance.

While they never really threatened the St Pat’s goal, the final 45 minutes performance by the home side would have given Devine inspiration for the visit of Shelbourne this Saturday and, more importantly now that the Brandywell appear to be out of gaining European qualification through the league, the away FAI Cup quarter-final tie against Sligo Rovers.

The meeting of  the Airtricity Premiership champions and the cup holders is the tie of the round of  round. The FAI have confirmed the kick-off for the clash will be 5.00pm and Derry City said they would provide ticketing information closer to the game.

Meanwhile, Derry City fans will get an opportunity to put their feelings to the team’s manager and board of directors at an “Open Forum” to the held in the club’s social club in Crawford Square. The meeting is open to club members, season ticket holders and shareholders.

In the only other Premiership game played last night, Sligo Rovers came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with the Co Louth side at Honky Dorys Park.
