Tributes from around the world have been paid to the 74-year-old following his unexpected death after a short illness on Friday last in Dublin where he had lived for a number of years.

The remains of the poet, playwright and author lay overnight the Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook, Dublin where thousands are expected to attend his Requiem Mass at 11.30am  where mourners have been gathering from earlier this morning.

In a 90-minute RTE One “News Special,” beginning at 11.00am, Bryan Dobson will present live coverage of the service.

Following Requiem Mass, the late poet will make his final journey to his home village of Bellaghy in Co Derry, arriving at around 5.45pm. Thousands are expected to turn out along the route to pay final tribute to one of Ireland’s greatest poets.

Mr Heaney will be laid to rest in a private service in Bellaghy Cemetery.
