IT was a case of too little too late for Derry this afternoon at Celtic Park.
Two second half goals came too late for Damian Barton’s men as Galway ran away with the game in the second half.
Derry trailed 0-07 to Galway’s 0-10 at the interval.
And the second half was only three minutes old when Galway’s Adrian Varley pulled off an emphatic when fired into the roof of the net.
Ryan Bell pointed for Derry which cut Galway’s down to six points as Sean Leo McGoldrick replaced Benny Heron.
Then Ciaran McFaul is black carded for a trip and is replaced by Shane Heavron, as James Kielt kicks a wide from a free.
With 49 minutes gone Tierney & Heaney scored points and Galway were in total control here with their lead stretching of 1-13 to 0-08.
Two more points from Galway without reply and the Men from the West extend their lead to 1-15 to 0-08 on 52 minutes.
Danny Heavron is replaced by his club mate Emmett McGuckin.
James Kielt pointed a free while Tomás Mallon spared Derry’s blushes by denying Galway a second goal with a fine block from a shot by Silke. The lead narrows to nine points.
Another point on 59 minutes for Galway as Conor McAtamney replaces Emmett Bradley. Derry trailed 0-09 to 1-16.
A high ball into the square is flicked to the net by Emmett McGuckin but Derry still trail 1-17 to 1-11 with two minutes to play.
Midfielder Paul Conroy kicked his second point of the day and Galway’s lead was 1-18 to 1-11 as the game entered injury time.
Ryan Bell then scored his sixth point of the day and Niall Loughlin scored a goal but the late finish came to late for Derry as Galway won by a margin of three points.
It is now back to the drawing board for manager Damian Barton who watched the match from the stand as he was banned from the touchline.
Derry’s next match is away to Tyrone on Saturday, March 5 with a 7 pm throw in at Healy Park.
