Derry Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin has welcomed the announcement by the Health Minister that there will be an inquiry into the recent abuse and exploitation of children both in care homes and elsewhere.
Ms McLaughlin, the chairperson of the Assembly’s Health Committee said it was “good news” the Edwin Poots had agreed with Sinn Féin that there needed to be an inquiry into the revelations.
Ms McLaughlin added: “Sinn Féin will be looking at the terms of reference, the independent nature and the accountability mechanisms within that inquiry. We have always said that the focus needs to be on protecting and safeguarding the most vulnerable within our society.”
She said the inquiry must not only learn the lessons from the recent revelations but accountability must also be a factor for any failings that had occurred.
