Harkin: People power delivered Creggan Hill safety measures

People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin has said people power delivered safety measures in Creggan Hill.

Said the Foyleside councillor: “The installation of new traffic lights and safety measures on Creggan Hill is a long-time coming.

“Anyone who regularly crosses the road there will be aware of the dangers, particularly for children, those with a disability and older people.

“This has been delivered because of people power campaigning by residents, Brooke Park users and Rosemount PS representatives.

“Meave O’Neill deserves credit in particular for bringing people together and spearheading the campaign of public meetings, door to door petitioning, protest and follow-up with DfI.

“The fact is that DfI rejected demands over many years to improve safety at particular highly used crossing points leaving residents feeling completely ignored. People power made the difference.

“DfI’s budget has been slashed by the Stormont Executive but is no excuse for not doing basic and necessary work to improve road safety in our communities.

“Residents in other areas facing neglect should take note of the people power model.

“Bottom-up campaigning empowers communities and brings people together to put pressure on decision makers.

“It’s the way forward.”
