SDLP councillor Brian Tierney has paid tribute to the generosity of the people of Derry.
Councillor Tierney was speaking after fundraising website GoFundMe revealed Derry was the second most generous place in the UK in 2021.
The ranking was based off the number of donations per capita in places with a population of over 50,000 people.
Said Cllr Tierney: “It came as no surprise when I learned from the recent GoFundMe ranking that Derry is one of the most generous places across these islands.
“Despite being an area where many people don’t have as much as they would like, people are always willing to put their hands in their pockets to help out those in need.
“We have seen it on countless occasions in recent years.
“When people need help funding an urgent medical procedure, travel expenses, funeral costs or are just fundraising for a good cause they have been met with an overwhelming response.
“Countless people’s lives have been changed through the kindness of the Derry public and when there’s a crisis we always pull together.
“The people of Derry do not just show their giving nature through online platforms like this.
“During my time as a councillor, and particularly my year as Mayor, I became aware of just how many charity and community organisations do unbelievable work across our city and much of that work would not be possible without the financial support they receive from local people.
“It’s unfortunate that all too often in Derry we are forced to rely on each other to provide the funding and services we require.
“That’s something that we need to address, people should be getting the support they need without having to rely on the help of others and I will continue to make that case whenever possible.
“It’s one of the things that defines us and anyone who visits Derry knows just what a warm and welcoming place it is.
“I’m proud of our city and it’s people and long may that generosity continue.”
